Doctor of Philosophy in Business with a Concentration in Accounting

The mission of the Department of Accounting at Virginia Commonwealth University is to prepare students for careers in accounting; to interpret and expand accounting knowledge and to render service to the profession and communities. The department does so by:

  1. Providing a learning environment in which students are encouraged to interact with others in identifying and solving accounting and business problems
  2. Investigating, developing, and sharing knowledge which has the potential for significant influence on accounting, business and education
  3. Interacting with the accounting profession, the business community, and the community at large.

Curriculum

Students must complete any necessary prerequisite courses, the research core, concentration area requirements and track requirements.

Prerequisite Courses

At the time of admission, student transcripts are reviewed to determine if any prerequisite courses are needed, prior to taking doctoral courses. Students admitted to the program without these prerequisites will be advised to the sequencing of taking needed coursework. Students are required to have completed at least one course at the master's level in each of the following areas. Additionally, students may be required to take additional courses to cover any deficiencies identified by the program advisor.

Track Requirements

Four courses in an approved track that will supplement the student's research interests must be completed. Tracks currently include: decision sciences, economics, finance, human resource management, information systems, international business, marketing or an approved field outside the School of Business in a school or department that offers a doctoral program.
