About VCU
Virginia Commonwealth University, one of the top research universities in the nation, offers students the opportunity to thrive academically and personally and to get involved with the community by combining real-world practice with traditional classroom learning. The prestige and excellence of our programs have helped us evolve into a university with a national and international reputation. Since its founding, VCU has promoted diversity in its academic programs, campus events, students, faculty and staff.
With more than 30,000 students on two campuses, we are the third-largest public research university in the commonwealth of Virginia. With origins dating back to 1838, VCU Medical Center, situated in the heart of the city of Richmond's business, government and financial district, houses the schools of Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine (including the emerging School of PUblic Health), Nursing and Pharmacy. The Monroe Park Campus, located in the historic residential neighborhood known as "the Fan," began its creation in 1917 as the Richmond School of Social Economy. Its purpose was to provide training in the field of social work. The school later became the Richmond Professional Institute. In 1968, RPI merged with the Medical College of Virginia to create VCU. Today the Monroe Park Campus houses the College of Humanities and Sciences (including the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs and the schools of Mass Communications and World Studies), the schools of the Arts, Business, Education, Engineering and Social Work, the VCU Graduate School, and VCU Life Sciences.

Location Matters
VCU is located in Richmond, the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia. VCU is a short two-hour drive from Washington, DC.
